1954
In 1953 Hungary came to Wembley and beat England 6-2.
This introduced the world to a new attacking style of
football and to a brilliant player named Puskas. Puskas
had a superb left foot - 'I never needed the right
one,' he said-
Hungary started the 1954
World Cup in Switzerland as favourites. They beat
West Germany in a First Round game and looked the
strongest team in the competition.
In the Final they again faced West Germany.
Hungary Favourites
Everyone expected Hungary to win easily. They were not
the first team to discover that German teams are always
difficult to beat.
The Final started well for Hungary. In the sixth minute
the great Puskas scored. Two minutes later they added a
second goal. At 2-0 the game seemed to be over, but
Germany fought back to 2-2.
In the 84th minute, Rahn gave Germany the lead
(see
the goal here - commentary in
German) Six minutes later the
World Cup belonged to Germany.
