The World Cup Story the first sixty years

World Cup 1990

In the opening game of Italia 90 Cameroon play the defending champions, Argentina. Argentina are expecting an easy win. They receive one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history.

The Africans have two players sent off but still win through a headed goal by Omar Biyick.

In their following game they surprise Romania with two goals from substitute Roger Milla. Milla is officially 38. Many suspect that he is at least two years older. But he certainly can still play!

Round of Sixteen

All the seeded teams qualified for the Round of Sixteen. Brazil again appeared to be one of the strongest sides. They dominated the game against their old rivals Argentina but lost. A single brilliant pass by Maradona allowed Caniggia to score the winning goal in a rare Argentine attack.

Another surprise in the Round of Sixteen was Cameroon’s 2-1 victory over Colombia. Once again Roger Milla was the hero. West Germany beat Holland in a very bad-tempered match. Both Rudi Voller and Frank Rikjaard were sent off early in the first half.

England made very hard work of beating Belgium. The score was 0-0 until the final minute of extra time when David Platt scored a dramatic winner.
